How to Choose the Right PCB Base Material: FR4, CEM-1, CEM-3 & Aluminium
Every PCB starts with a copper-clad laminate. Choosing the wrong base material is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in electronics design. With 30+ years in PCB raw materials, we select laminate the way few fabs can.
FR4 — the default workhorse
FR4 is a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate that balances cost, mechanical strength and electrical performance. It suits the vast majority of single, double and multilayer designs.
CEM-1 and CEM-3 — cost-optimized options
CEM-1 (paper core with a glass surface) and CEM-3 (glass non-woven core) offer lower cost for simpler boards, common in consumer goods and lighting. CEM-3 is a closer substitute for FR4 in double-sided work.
Aluminium — when heat is the enemy
For LED and power applications, an aluminium-core (metal-core) laminate pulls heat away from components, extending life and allowing higher power density.
Quick selection guide
- High reliability / multilayer → FR4
- Low-cost single-sided consumer board → CEM-1
- Cost-sensitive double-sided board → CEM-3
- LED / high-power / thermal load → Aluminium MCPCB
